A Collection of Prayers for use in Hospitals: Day 5 – For True Humility

Day 5, page 28 – first prayer
Prayer for true humility

Keep us, O God, from the ugly stain of the sin of self. May we always remember that it is by [Your] Grace alone that we are what we are, and may the thought of our missed opportunities and wasted talents remind us that we too have need to use the prayer, “God be merciful to me a sinner. ”  Heavenly Father, keep us from passing judgement on our fellow men. May we realize that if we had their temptations we might not have been so strong, and that if they had had our opportunities of doing right they might have done better, and thus teach us the true humility of spirit with which [You have] promised to dwell. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. [Amen].

Suggested Old and New Testament verses:

9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.

(2 Peter 2: 9, 21 (KJV): 9, 21; 2-e Петра 2:9,21 (RUSV); 2 Petrus 2:9,21 (LUTH1545))

12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

(1 Corinthians 10: 12-13 (KJV); 1-е Коринфянам 10:12-13 (RUSV); 1 Korinther 10:12-13 (LUTH1545))

15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

(1 John 2:15-16 (KJV); 1-e Иоанна 2:15-16 (RUSV); 1 Johannes 2:15-16 (LUTH1545))

2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

(1 Corinthians 13:2 (KJV); 1-е Коринфянам 13:2 (RUSV); 1 Korinther 13:2 (LUTH1545))

7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

(1 John 4:7-9 (KJV); 1-e Иоанна 4:7-9 (RUSV); 1 Johannes 4:7-9 (LUTH1545))

7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

(James 4:7-8 (KJV); Иакова 4:7-8 (RUSV); Jakobus 4:7-8 (LUTH1545))

9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

(Joshua 1:9 (KJV); Иисус Навин 1:9 (RUSV); Josua 1:9 (LUTH1545))

1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

(Romans 12:1-2 (KJV); К Римлянам 12;1-2 (RUSV); Roemer 12:1-2 (LUTH1545))

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(1 John 1:8-9 (KJV); 1-e Иоанна 1:8-9 (RUSV); 1 Johannes 1:8-9 (LUTH1545))

29 He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.

31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

(Isaiah 40:29,31 (KJV); Исаия 40:29,31 (RUSV); Jesaja 40:29,31 (LUTH1545))

In the blog posts under this title we will revisit a collection of prayers published by the BBC* in the 1950’s for use in hospitals, [] denote changes. These prayers included Psalms suggested reading within the text and here we add some Old and New Testament scripture that could also be associated with the prayers.
