A Collection of Prayers for use in Hospitals: Day 6 – Teach Us to Pray

Day 6, page 32 – first prayer

Teach Us to Pray

O Almighty God, who [has] taught us by [Your] Blessed Son, Jesus Christ, to use the power which [You have] given to us to be in constant and instand communion with [You], give us grace to cultivate this [Your] gift of prayer, so that we may grow strong to resist temptation, and more ready to do [Your] will. May we learn not only to say our prayers, but to pray them, and to believe that whenever we pray, whether in private, or in the company of others, [You] are listening; and in order that we may obtain our petitions, may [Your] Holy Spirit teach us to ask for such things as shall please [You]. We ask this for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. [Amen.]

Suggested Old and New Testament verses:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

‭‭Phil.‬ ‭4:6‬ ‭NIVUK‬‬

‭‭John‬ ‭15:7‬ ‭NIVUK‬‬

“But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.”

‭‭Matt.‬ ‭6:6-7‬ ‭NIVUK‬‬

“‘So I say to you: ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

‭‭Luke‬ ‭11:9‬ ‭NIVUK‬‬

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”

‭‭1 Tim.‬ ‭2:1-4‬ ‭NIVUK‬‬

““Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.””

“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

‭‭James‬ ‭5:16‬ ‭NIVUK‬‬

“‘And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

‭‭Matt.‬ ‭6:5-8‬ ‭NIVUK‬‬

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6:18‬ ‭NIVUK‬‬

“The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.”

‭‭Psalm‬ ‭34:17‬ ‭NIVUK‬‬

“Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.”

‭‭Luke‬ ‭18:1‬ ‭NIVUK‬‬

“‘This, then, is how you should pray: ‘ “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. ” For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”

‭‭Matt.‬ ‭6:9-14‬ ‭NIVUK‬‬

In the blog posts under this title we will revisit a collection of prayers published by the BBC* in the 1950’s for use in hospitals, [] denote changes. These prayers included Psalms suggested reading within the text and here we add some Old and New Testament scripture that could also be associated with the prayers.
